Aromatic Cedar: Protection for Your Clothing
Indoor furniture has been made with aromatic cedar for many years. About a century ago, it became very popular for building closets since it was mainly used for storage of clothing all along since it was thought that the wood offered protection against moths and other pests. It has now been proven that certain types of cedar does indeed offer a degree of protection, such as Eastern Red Cedar largely because of the aroma which it gives off. However, maintaining the wood in a good condition is essential for the effects to continue.
There are several options available to you if you want to build your own closet and take advantage of the protection aromatic cedar offers. The cheapest one is to use wafer board panels. These will give you a quick and easy solution, and they will still have a significant effect in reducing the risk to your clothes. The one disadvantage is that they will never look as aesthetic as the more expensive options. It is entirely up to you how much money you want to spend to create a better finish.
A step up from the wafer board is plywood which is still much cheaper than the solid panels but can be made to look better than the very cheap wafer boards. The most expensive option is to use solid wood panels, and this option will give you the same classic look which the closets of the past had. If you are looking for quality and are prepared to pay for it, this will definitely be the best way to go. If the protection of your clothes is the sole criteria, you can achieve it in cheaper ways.
You can even buy mothballs these days which are made from aromatic cedar. This will be a good solution for you if you have clothing which needs to be stored for any length of time, but you do not have a cedar closet. It is still worth thinking about building a cedar closet for the future, as this will give you the greatest possible degree of protection.
So once you have your cedar closet, you can even buy a cedar shoe rack or tree to put inside to keep your shoes organized. The aromatic quality of cedar is especially effective in reducing and even eliminating the odor from shoes. Aromatic cedar is a natural product which has stood the test of time, and science is now demonstrating why. Tests are still ongoing to measure the effect of the wood on other parasites. It seems highly likely that cedar flooring will have uses far beyond the bedroom. What is certain, though, is that you can begin to protect your fine clothing with a closet lining made from aromatic cedar.
